The 65-year-old Italian was axed despite being described by the Foxes as “the most successful Leicester City manager of all time”.
And lifetime Foxes fan Gary Lineker said: “After all that Claudio Ranieri has done for Leicester City, to sack him now is inexplicable, unforgivable and gut-wrenchingly sad.”
According to sources close to the club, Claudio Ranieri’s dismissal came as a complete shock to the players.
The club’s owners had initially intended to let Ranieri go with dignity at the end of the season but ran out of patience and delivered the brutal news when he returned to England after Wednesday’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at Sevilla.
His axeing puts Huddersfield manager David Wagner back in the frame after the club looked at bringing him in last summer only to opt for Ranieri.
