Few weeks after the American Justice Department warned that President Donald Trump’s dealings and communications with Russia could leave him in a compromised position, national security adviser Michael Flynn has resigned after misleading officials about communications with Russia before the new administration came into power.
Sources say the main reason Flynn resigned is because it is illegal for private citizens to conduct US diplomacy which he did before he was appointed national security adviser by Trump.
“Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador,” Flynn wrote in his official resignation letter.
“I am tendering my resignation, honoured to have served President Trump, who in just three weeks has reoriented American foreign policy in fundamental ways to restore America’s leadership position in the world,” he added.
In his place, Keith Kellogg, a retired general, who was before now the chief of staff of the White House National Security Council, has been named the acting national security adviser while Trump determines who should fill the position.
